Whether our consultants completed their time with FDM two weeks ago or half a decade ago, our alumni network is there to offer support, updates and opportunities to our former consultants while staying updated on the wonderful work they do around the world. Ray Cheng is from Mainland China and joined our Hong Kong Academy in 2016. Now permanent with a major client, we spoke to him about his journey.

A career in tech has always appealed to me. I wanted to pursue a role where I could keep in touch with the most advanced technology on the market, cover a variety of industries and of course, learn as much as possible. I joined FDM Group after finishing my degree at City University Hong Kong, as their IT Programme looked like the gateway I needed to bring me from university into the world of work.

Over the last three years, I’ve had the opportunity to take part in an array of projects on-site, which led me to me recently receiving an offer for a full-time role with a major energy client in Hong Kong as an IT Project Consultant. I’ll be the project manager of several IT related tasks and responsible for the overall project execution and delivery. I will also be in charge of project governance and portfolio management for specific IT programs assigned to me.

The placement I received through FDM has enabled me to experience a range of opportunities, provided the chance to make decisions from what I learnt in the academy as well as how to apply these decisions in the workplace.

Like every job, there are areas of difficulty. I believe change management is the biggest challenge when it comes to delivering a project. For example, infrastructure changes might render changes in project dependency and project schedule, while delivering a new solution will require the project management team to also manage changeable and diversified user expectations and user requirements.

As an FDM consultant working for a client, you will confront different challenges and changes every day, but the best advice I can give is to be positive and confident. Always learn from your experiences, as they will teach you so much!
