Miles Warriner is the first FDM Consultant to be placed at HSBC in Australia. Having now been onsite for three months in HSBC’s Digital Centre of Excellence as a business analyst, he tells us more about his placement and life in Sydney.

My journey to HSBC in Sydney started in the northern(ish) city of Sheffield where I studied business management. I came out with a degree and an idea of where I wanted to be in a few years’ time but no real plan of how I’d get there.

As a recent graduate they say ‘the world is your oyster’, which I found to be largely true. With a wealth of potential industries and opportunities to pursue in the months following graduation, the issue facing myself and many others in a similar position is more finding the direction that is right for you.

I have always had a keen interest in technology and its impact on our everyday lives. Combined with the opportunity that FDM offers to work with global, blue chip companies such as HSBC, it soon became apparent to me that this was the direction I wanted to take. I started my nine weeks of training as a business analyst in the Leeds academy where I developed a number of both tangible and intangible skills, learnt about the industries I’d be working in and met some great people along the way.

As a business analyst for HSBC it is my job to actively manage business requirements within an agile/scrum environment, breaking them down into user stories, grooming the stories to a point where they are ready for the scrum team to pick up and then ensuring that the expected requirement is delivered through the development and implementation phases. I am also involved in solution development where business requirements are turned into tangible solutions for the issue. This requires a strong understanding of the banks system architecture.

I always knew that I wanted the opportunity to travel with work however I didn’t expect it to happen as quickly as it did. When I received the offer to work in Sydney I couldn’t have said yes fast enough with thoughts of the sun, surf and vibrant city life flashing across my mind. However, it was a combination of this and the opportunity to be placed with such an exciting and expansive company that convinced me to make the move. The relocation was smooth despite coming all the way from the UK, getting myself set up and into work within a couple of weeks. I have now been in my placement with HSBC for three months and I am settling in well with work and Sydney as a whole.

It’s safe to say Sydney didn’t disappoint, with endless sights to see, food to eat and beaches to visit there is something for everyone – not to mention the perfect weather!
