As a global company, we are proud to recruit, train and deploy IT and business professionals across Europe, North America and APAC. Many of our trainees express an eagerness to work with clients abroad when they join the Careers Programme, and Roy Cheng is no exception. Born in Malaysia, Roy joined the FDM London Academy which led him to start out on client site in Singapore and now he is about to start a new placement in Hong Kong. He shared his FDM journey with us.

I first came across FDM at a careers event and was drawn in by the opportunity to kick-start my career in technology as well as the possibility to work in multiple locations across the world. I graduated from the London School of Economics with an Actuarial Science degree and joined the APAC Graduate Programme in London, on the IT Service Management stream.

During my training I secured a placement in Singapore with TD Securities in the Risk Reporting Technology Support team. It was challenging at first as I came from a non-technical background, but the training at FDM provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that allowed me to take on the role with zest. After a yearlong placement at TD Securities the opportunity to move to Hong Kong and work with a multinational investment bank arose in the Equity Sales and Trading Support team. My first placement played a big part in securing this role as I had a deeper understanding of the role of an application support analyst and had better proficiency in SQL and UNIX. I’m excited to start my next placement as it will give me exposure to a new environment, and I will have a new set of challenges to approach. I am sure it will be a steep learning curve but I am looking forward to it!

I enjoy travelling and I believe the best way to understand a country’s culture is to live like a local, so I’m grateful for the opportunities that FDM has provided me with as I don’t believe it would have been easy for me to relocate to another country without their career opportunities and support.

To any graduate who is looking to start a career; anyone can start a career in tech, regardless of their degree. As long as you have a vision of what you want to achieve, technology can be a very powerful tool to support it. Joining FDM is a great choice for people who don’t have a technical background, as without FDM, I would not have been able to secure these jobs.
