Life in Singapore

Spin the globe, point your finger and you’ll never hit Singapore. That’s because it’s one little red dot (happens to also be its unofficial nickname) positioned on a massive globe. But I’ll let you in on a secret, this little red dot is actually a luminescent sparkle located in the epicentre of Southeast Asia.

Singapore is a city-state, so when you move here and write the address on your birthday cards please double up, “Singapore, Singapore” and don’t forget to show off the beaches, jungles, and the city skyline when you write home. Also, feel free to write your postcard address in English. Singapore is a cultural melting pot but English (Singlish) is the main language.

Singapore is South East Asia’s epicentre, so when I first moved here from Canada I was amazed with how easy it was to travel. I went from a once-a-year 8 hour-flight vacation to “Hey, it’s Friday, let’s go to Bali for the weekend”. Everything is close; Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia to name a few.  Whether you’re a thrill seeker, a backpacker or a beach relaxer, most of these places are just a short flight away.

There is also a huge variety of things to do here. Take a dip in the world-famous sky top infinity pool at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Got the nature bug? Pick up a Kayak at Pasir Ris Park. Fancy relaxing on the beach, head to Sentosa and enjoy a cocktail at one of the beach clubs.

Singapore is known for its food. Years ago I convinced myself that I’d only move if I could get my weekly dose of poutine. To my surprise Singapore offered a wide range of poutine; truffle poutine, poutine with salted egg yolk, poutine with flambéed raclette cheese! Not only is there great local cuisine – try the laksa, the chilli crab, or the deliciously simple chicken rice – but many world renowned chefs come here to open up restaurants. Singapore also has a wide selection of supermarkets that are fully stacked with imported goods from all across the world.

Fun fact – two of Singapore’s food stands were awarded the prestigious Michelin star.

When the sun sets, Singapore lights up like a true Asian metropolis. If you take an evening stroll down the Marina Bay Walkway you will stumble across a live jazz band playing and a light show right on top of the water. Then midway through the Helix Bridge you are able to get the perfect shot of the illuminated city sky scrapers and on the other side the iconic Merlion fountain in Merlion Park.

If you get tired of walking, stop by Blu Jaz Café for a few drinks and laughs. Feeling lucky and restless? Drop by the infamous Marina Bay Sands Casino or go and check out Harry’s bar, the birthplace of the Singapore Sling.

Singapore is an exciting urban city and a fantastic mix of Indian, Malay and Chinese culture. I’ve lived here for over 5 years and in these years I’ve grown to love this little red dot. It became my doorstep to Asia, a home away from home. I encourage you to spin your globe – just cheat a little.
