If you’re looking for ways to stand out amongst your peers in the workforce, you have come to the right place! We sat down with Teresa Panford, the North American Academy Administration Manager and Pro Skills Trainer in the New York office, who gave us some inside training tips that will help you get the most out of your time in the FDM Academy.
- Always Keep Your LinkedIn Updated
No one knows the experience you have better than you do. But, do you really remember all the amazing things you were praised for at your previous job? How about all your outstanding achievements while in school? Well, LinkedIn is a great place to keep track of all your accomplishments. During the first week of training, you will be asked to create and/or update your LinkedIn profile. Since it will ultimately become your living resume and a way of building your network, we make this an essential part of training. Get ahead of the game and impress your Trainers by already being one step ahead!
- Maintain a Strong Work Ethic
Always be mindful of your brand. How will people remember you? From the moment you are invited in for an interview, you should be mindful of your unconscious behaviour such as body language, etc. At FDM, we value professionalism—dress for your role and always prepare for an interview or a presentation. Also, show enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn. After your training, you will begin working for one of FDM’s prestigious clients. It is important to get in the habit of demonstrating responsibility and discipline by showing up on time and working to the best of your ability.
- Be Proactive
FDM is recognised for providing trainees with superior training and a valuable service to clients. Once you have joined the Academy, Teresa recommends that you “go the extra mile, because you will get what you put in” during your time in training. If you are having trouble with the material, make sure you reach out and get the help you need. After all, the Trainers are here to clarify any questions and prepare you for a successful career in IT.
- Build Relationships
Get to know the people around you and add them on LinkedIn. There are very talented people at FDM and someone in the same room as you could potentially be your future employer or employee one day. Also, be sure to build a strong relationship with your Account Manager. The better they get to know you, the easier it will be for them to find you a placement you are happy with.
- Have Fun!
Regardless of which programme you are training in, the time will fly by! Enjoy it while it lasts and make meaningful connections!
